Independent Reading
Independent reading (IDR or SSR) is reading that is done in the classroom and at home. Students need to read
"approximately" four books per quarter. To determine how many pages to read each night, divide the total number
of pages by 14. The average book can be read in about a two weeks reading 30 minutes every day. For books that
are 400 pages, an additional two weeks will be allowed. (exception-The Invention of Hugo Cabaret = 2 wks.)
There will be a journal grade (60%) and comprehension grade (40%) for each of the four books. Approximately one
of those books each quarter will be a Literature Group novel.
While reading, students will complete a five part Quarter Journal, to be collected every two weeks. Skills for each
journal will match district skill requirements.
BEFORE YOU START READING!!!!!!
Please check to make sure that the book you have selected has an AR quiz. All Accelerated Reader quizzes must
be completed at least two days prior to the end of each quarter. If there is no quiz you will need to check to see if
Book Adventure has a quiz for your book. If they do not, you will be completing a AR Substitute quiz.
Any genre may be read, but our 7th grade focus is on:
1. fantasy/legend (King Arthur Web Quest)
2. science fiction
3. Heroes in myths, fairy tales, legends, tall tales, folk tales
4. non-fiction which includes our Expostitory Text and Dream Units
When selecting a book use the five finger method and/or your lexile level to help choose the appropriate level. You
may also wish to visit our Book Cafe or Shelfari (on the same page) to help in your selection of an appropriate book.
